The Elsie managed to get out of •Okarito yeuterday jamd arrived, at Hokitika last night. The vessel sails for Okuru to-night. You are reminded of the ball in the Public Hall, Kokutahi, this evening iu aid of tlie hall funds. Splendid arrangements have been made. The music will be supplied by the Black Hand Orchestra and bright music will result. There has been fine sunny weather prevailing for the past few days, wifh an easterly wind of a somewhat cold nature .blowing, the outcome ol the rough weather on the East Coast. The days have been warm but there, has been a decided frost in the ear.y mornings. The members of the Ladies’ Hockey Club, wlfo represented the West Coast t at the Invercargill hockey tournament, returned to Hokitika last evening and had a cordial welcome home bv friends assembled. Deaths in the West Coast' district were two—one each from tuberculosis and pneumonic influenza. ; The Westland County Council yesterday agreed, with one councillor (Mr Keenan) dissenting, to fall into lipe’ with the Highways Board, and fixed', the daily rate of wages.on, the second-' ary highways under the control of the Council, at 14s per day, instead of. 15s as hitherto paid. The roads affected are Lake Kanieri, Ivokatahi main road to Koiterangi (Camelback- Junction), first section of. Upper Ivokatahi road, and Detour (Wataroa) road. The Public Works Department has been paying 14s per day on all highway roads for a considerable time past.
