NAVY LEAGUE
ART UNION PROPOSED. WELLINGTON, Sept. 3. The Wellington branch of the Navy League gave its approval to a suggestion that the New Zealand Branca should conduct an art union in aid of its funds, but there was some difference of opinion before the motion was passed. ‘ Tbe secretary, Mr R. Darroch, said that he thought, in view of the state of the League’s finances, the New Zealand Branch might have an art union if it was organised in the same way as had been done by other bodies. There should lie a profit of about £17,000 to be shared. Mr A. Walker was opposed to the idea, and said that the country was in a bud way if the Navy League had to have an art union to help its funds.
The’chairman (Mr W. Perry): Well isn’t it?
Mrs Darling supported the suggestion, saying that most people who bought a ticket in an art union did so mainly with the intention of supporting the object for which it was being conducted. An nrt union was certainly more dignified than a jilmble sale, and few people objected to jumble sales. After Mr Perry had spoken in favour of the scheme, and made it,clear that if by the time the League’s application was granted, the market for an 'art union did not appear to be good enough the proposal could be dropped. His motion that an application should be made for a- license was carried.
