DEFENCE DISMISSALS

NOTHING DEFINITE YET. \By Telegraph—Press Association). WELLINGTON, September 5. Questioned whether any information had been received from ibe Defence authorities of offers, of the Imperial Government of positions for officers of the New Zealand staff corps, who may be dismissed as the result of the suspension of compulsory miiitar;.* training. Mr Cobbe said lie had received nothing definite. Some time ago, inquiries had been made through the High Commissioner as to whether there was any likelihood of vacancies in the British Army but he had no material information in reply. The Minister pointed out that a certain amount of retrenchment had taken place among officers of the British Army, and lie anticipated, that if any vacancies occurred, preference would be given to officers at Horne. He understood one offer had been received in New Zealand for a position in the British Army, but it was not made officially. I

In reply to a question, Mr Cobbe said there was nothing to prevent an officer of the New Zealand Staff Corps, from negotiating' privately for posts abroad and lie assumed that the offer lie referred to had been mnde ns the result of private-inquiries. '

On being communicated with by u ‘‘Post” reporter, Defence Headquarters made the following announcement.

The Colonial Office and War Office have very generously offered to absorb some of the officers of the permanent forces of New Zealand, who my he surplus to the requirements. No details are yet available as to the actual stations, rates of pay or number of appointments available. The “Post” says it is reported that there is no lack of offers to accept appointments abroad.
