RACING.

DISTRICT RACING COMMITTEE. A meeting of the District Racing Comittce was held yesterday at Greymouth when there were present: Messis T. E. Coates (chair), A. Behan, D. J. Evans, W. Pa riitt, A. E. Kilgour and W. B. Gilbert. Mr J. O’Brien, M.P. wrote in reply to the Committee's representations, that lie was against the increased totalise tor taxation, and was in favour of liets being wired.

R. J. Flower’s application for a trainer’s license was recommended. The President suggested that tbe Various clubs meet befoie tbei programmes were drawn up, so that theie would be uniformity in them. Mr Evans said that lie did not think that the Westland Club would have a hurdle race, but they would put maiden and back races on each day. There would be little if any decrease in the stakes.

GREY JOCKEY CLUB

At the meeting of the Greymoutli Jockey Club the New Zealand Racing Conference reported that the Stipendiary ; Steward had ieported that attention by the clubs Was required in the following matters ‘ —Faulty starting machines and weighing scales, inaccuracies in tile compilation of rae cards, and the need for stricter control over access to jockey’s rooms.

Members, generally, expressed the opinion that any of the faults mentioned by the Steward were not applicable to the Greymoutli Club. Mr W. Coltman was nominated as a member.

A discussion arose as to the agreement between the Nelson, WestjxM't and West Coast Clubs as to the official complimentary tickets.

Mr Bohan stated that lie was in favour of the. abolition of these passes, on the ground that their use was being abused. It would he better it a compact were entered into, that Stewards only be given passes.

The Chairman said that it would be better to abandon the agreement altogether.

Mr Bcban—Then I. will move that we withdraw entirely from the pact. Mr Williams said that the agreement had been reached as a ; result of a. .conference between the various clubs and there should be a conference to do away with it.

The Chairman said that if the list were purged, it would be difficult at times to refuse a pass.

Mr Beban: I thing we are weak if we do not take a stand. Why should we fill tbe course with deadheads? After a further discussion it was decided that a conference of the clubs be called to deal with the matter of official, and complimentary passes, generally, with a recommendation to the club’s delegates that they support the issuing of tickets to Stewards only, The Chairman, Mr Behan and the Secretary, Mr M. J. Fogarty, were appointed as the club’s delegates. The balance sheet, as presented by tbe Secretary for the year ending June 30th. 1930, showed a credit balance of £526 9s 9d.

VETERAN RETIRES. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Sept. 4. A decision to retire from the position of clerk of tlie course at the various racing and trotting meetings in Auckland at which he lias become a # picturesque figure lias been made by Mr Arthur Selbv. Writing to tlie Auckland Trotting Club, Air Selby said it was with regret that, lie resigned, but he was not as young as he was and his sea.t on a horse was not so firm. The committee of the Club instructed the secretary to write to Air Selby a letter of appreciation of his services. Air Selby has been clerk of the course at Ellerslie for the Auckland Racing Club for 36 years.
