Tobacco cultivation in the Dominion is the subject of a return submitted to Parliament on the motion of Mr Black (Motueka), which shows that Nelson commenced production in 1925. Auckland entering the field in 1928-29, when the production comprised .-—Nelson district, 1,062,3921 b; Auckland, 45,200 lb ; other districts, 60,0001 b. Last year the Nelson output was 1,045,6321 b, ot a value of £105,828; Auckland 215,600 lb, value £21,460; other districts, nil!. ahe growing acreage of this crop is shown as follows: Year Acreage. 1925- 450 1926- 300 1927- .-V 720 1528:29 1608 1929-30 1587
There are 491 growers in the-Nelson district, and five companies cultivating tobacco in the Auckland district.
