TRAGEDY OF TARIFF WAR,
(Australian Press Association.)
(Received this day at 9.40 a.m.) SYDNEY, Sept. 5
At a conference of representatives of co-operative butter factories of New South Wales, C. E. Hears (Chairman of the Co-operative Distributor Society) said the economic tragedy of the moment was the tariff wajr raging between nations wherein Australia was deeply involved. This coupled with the fall in the purchasing power of the consumer everywhere, left primary industries in a serious position. It was also apparent .that the flood of foodstuffs into Britain was increasing and butiei prices in London would certainly be (jower than last year. The average price of butter was already twopence farthing lower. They should not tolerate the .multiplicity of sellers in England. The conference approved of a movement in Britain for intense development, of trade, within the Empire/also the principle of standardisation of grading of Australian butter. ■
