GREAT DEEDS. WRONG SENSE OF PROPORTION? LONDON, August 22. The fear which is felt by Fascist leaders that official encouragement of sport may be over-reaching itself was expressed omcially by Signor Tursti in an address to Italian representatives at the Olympic Games, says the Rome correspondent of the “Times.” “While .grateful,” .hie said, “to champions for their successes in games, where Italy a. short time ago was inferior, Fascist students refuse to define their achievement as heroic, and react against those hyperboles which wrongly transform. the winners of athletic competitions into deities. Fascists realise that the stature of heroes is that consecrated by great deeds prepared in vigils of the spirit, and that the worthiest prize is conquered through hard discipline in study and learning, from which champions return to their occupations without the playing of trumpets and without. rhetorical fanfares.”
Italian newspapers approve of the address, declaring that the present
movement for physical regeneration must not be allowed tp obstruct the
intellectual activity of the race.
