HEROISM OF DOG
MID-OCEAN DRAMA
LONDON, July 17
When the French steam trawier, Griz Ness, arrived at Fleetwood, Lancashire, on Tuesday, the story was told of the heroism of a Newfoundland dog, a pet of the crew, On Sunday afternoon, \vhen tho Griz Nez was near the Klondyke herring ground, in the West Scottish fishing area, one of the crew, strolling round to the stern of the trawler, saw the dog Turc struggling in the sea 200 yards away.
“Dog overboard!” The fisherman’s cry was heard in the wheelhouse, the engines were reversed, and, as the trawler came full speed astern, it was seen that the dog was endeavouring to keep a man afloat. The man was Jean Marie Martin, ot Boulogne, one oif the firemen, and it was realised that he had fallen oveiboard unobserved by any but the dog, and Turc, with whom Martin was a favourite, had jumped overboard to save him,
But before the trawler could reach the spot, Turc was compelled by exhaustion to release his hold and Mar« tin disappeared. Turc was in a half-drowned condition when lifted on board.
