TOTAL FOREIGN. 1928 .. 3,456,997 30,411,338 1929 3,759.126 32,506,992 GRAND TOTAL. 1928 6,112,972 52,044,506 1929 6,406,623 54,784,813 The United Kingdom offers, says the Chamber of Commerce Journal, London, a valuable market for imported 'butter, and, as might be expected, the competition is particularly keen. Up to the present, Continental countries . and Argentina have together furnished us with more butter than • Empire countries, and, with Denmark Continuing to forge ahead as the leading source of supply, and the possibility of larger shipments from Argentina, there doeis not seem much nrospect of supplies of Empire butter exceeding by any considerable margin imports of the foreign product. The position of New Zealand is very satisfactory, and during last year it further considerably increased its share of the United Kingdom market. On the other hand, supplies of Australian butter fell off, and the Irish Free State rather more than held its own. These three Empire countries /occupy "the second, third, and fourth portions, respectively, in the‘-United Kingdom butter market. New Zealand is easily the lending dairying country in the Empire, and its industry * continues to progress, The Dominion is fortunate in possessing all thb conditions necessary for the maintenance of a successful butter and cheese making industry, which more than any other aspect of the Dominion’s economic life contrlbutes to ito export trade. The importance to New Zealand of Its dairying industry may be judged from the foot that during last year export* of butter alone amounted to 1,658,797 owt., valued at £13,227,917. In the previous year they amounted to 1,449,570 cwt., valued at £11,302,667.

.There is also, a successful dairying industry in Australia, but exports are usually only about half of those from New Zealand. For the fiscal year .1928-29 exports of Australian butter Mamounted to 102,442,843 lb., valued, at . £7,545,430, as against 99;164,946. lb., valued at £6,905,933, in 1927-28.

> The Canadian dairying industry is a progressive one; but a large internal consumption precludes, in the present'stage of the development of the industry, any really outstanding exports. of butter, although the Dominion’s shipments of cheese are very considerable, and are given below. In recent years a promising dairy ffarming industry has developed in the “ Union of South Africa, and at the present time this is not. only able to eater for-.the domestic market, but so: far as butter is concerned, is able ■to - export small quantities. During 1929 shipments of butter and butter substitutes from the Union of South Africa amounted to 2,186,5021 b., valued at £154,620. Ip the previous year exports were 214,264 lb,, valued at £18,222. / ...

New' Zealand continues to maintain its leading position in the United Kingdom .cheese market, and la«t year, with a. greatly increased trade, supplied 'about 60 per cent of the total imports-'of. cheese. The Dominion has made reaLly phenomenal progress in the cheese market. Duiing the last , pre-war year New Zealand cheese w'as imported into the United Kingdom to the exteht of about 550,000 . cwt., which was 25 par cent of the entire supplies. Canada was then the biggest shipper to this country, furnishing more than half our imported requirements, ' but to-day the share of. Canadian cheese has dropped to less than 2o per cent. For the most part the cheeses supplied by countries outside the Empire are those varieties that are not produced on any considerable scale sin the Dominions.

The outstanding importance of the United Kingdom market to the cheese producer in New Zealand is shown

by the fact all the surplus cheese in the' Dominion is shipped to the United. Kingdom. During 1929 exports of New Zealand cheese totalled 1,779,093 cwt., valued at £7,017,463, as against 1.567,272 Cwt., valued at £6,693,951, in the previous year.

Canadian cheetie, which, it will be noted, fell off considerably in supply Hast year, also comes for the most part to England. Last year total exports of Canadian cheese amounted to 929,461 cwt, as against 1,141,525 cwt in 1928.

Australia sends a fair quantity of cheese to the United Kingdom, but it is never likely to assume the position of importance which the New' Zealand product has attained. For the fiscal year 1928-29 exports of Australian cheese amounted to 8,330,972 lb., valued at £329,700. In 1927-28 they were 6,926.6911 b., valued at £260,235.
