SYSTEM OF TRAIN CONTROL

SPEEDING-UP ,EXPECTED. OAMARU, Sept. 1. The train control system which has been in vogue during the past two or tnree years between Ohristchuich and Oamaru and Christchurch and the West Coast is to be extended to Dunedin and ultimately to Invercargill.>, The Oamaru-Dunedin section is now being connected, the work proceeding from both centres. From Dunedin the special wiring work entailed has reached north as far as Waitati, while the gang working from Oamaru is in the vicinity of Deborah, In railway circles here it is understood that there is a probability of a control office being established at Timaru, which will relieve the Christchurch office to some extent. A control office will also be erected at Dunedin and when the system is complete Invercargill will take charge of the southern portion. With four control offices, it is stated, an all-round improvement and speeding-up of the service will be possible. Station masters \yill be relieved of arranging crossing, each of the four sections being in sole charge of the control officers, who will be in constant touch with rail traffic.
