Yatala prison is notorious, for riots, fights and escapes. It has been the •subject.of much argument in Parl*anien.t, and. many commissions of inquiry, due mainly to the fact that it was, being run' on regulations 70 yeal-s old v ■ ■
In an attempt to break away from these old;, trouble-breeding traditions; the administration became ultra-mod-ern, aud.it was. not unusual for * the whole prison to take part in Saturday afternoon -football, matches in a .paddock adjoining the gaol. Also, it was quite the, usual thing to see one of the gaol’s most notorious escapees—after he had reformed—driving the • Covernor’s car outside the walls.
