NGATAITOAS IN.MOURNING, \ ■i’---- \ ■ WELLINGTON, August 27. The Ngataitoa- tribe, began tlieir mourning to-day when the ashes of Sir Maui Pomare arrived at Waikanae. The obsequies were marked by a wealth of Maori ritual and the firing of single rifle .shots as the remains of the leader approached the pa. The special carriage which bore the ashes were taken to Waikanae as part of the main trunk express.. There the engine shunted the carriage on‘to. -;a loop line. Chosen ones gather round and placed tlie carved -casket on- a wooden carrier which was manned a$ each dud. A fifth Maori led; grasping a taialfa or ceremonial spedr, atid slo.wly they bore the ashes away. Lady-Po-liiare and tier' children 1 followed, -tvhile other niounicrs'' ami ; <seV6ral members of Paiiiaineht brought lip the'Year.; In silence the procession left tlie station. A. Maori .'woman gave a long-drinvn cry and tlie crowd fell in behind, oil the march to the meeting house . of the tribe. Crowds of wailing women waving green branches met the cortege. Chants off grief followed as a.ll aged chief approaciied the casket. Then came speeches of lamentation and dances.

The ashes will remain in a tent among fern leaves until mid-night tomorrow, when they will be moved on to Waitara.
