CAR ON FOOTPATH
LITTLE GIRL STRUCK. AUCKLAND, Aug. 27. Though carried fifty feet along a footpath by the front of a motor-ca», this morning, a girl aged nine years, Thelma Jean Runciman, of Luke Street Otahuhu, received no other injuries than a severe bruising. Accompanied by her mother, the child was walking along the street through Otahuhu and when near the school gate, was struck by a motor-cai, which mounted the pavement without warning. The mother had a narrow escape. xiie driver of the oar, Thomas Boater, a. butcher of Ponsonby Road, said that, he was coming from his home at Buckland’s Bench. When he was-pass-ing through Otahuhu about 9.45 he saw suddenly in front of him a waggon backing out of a gateway. He had no time. to i avoid it altogether • but, in an endeavour to avert a serious collision, he swerved on the footpath. The other accident followed. The car was extensively damaged on one side, much of the bodywork was torn away, the windscreen was smashed, and one lamp was broken.
