A BILL KILLED
A SEQUEL. WELLINGTON, August 27. There was an interesting sequel In the House to-night to the killing’ in committee of the Bank of New Zealand Act Amendment Bill, sponsored by Mr Langstone (Wnimarino). It had been pointed out in the debate that Mr Langstone had been fortunate in getting his measure as far, as the committee stage,' and although the defeat of the Bill was regarded as a foregone conclusion, the short title was rejected by a margin of only'twelve votes, several United members voting with the Labour Party’against Reform and the remainder of the Government group; Reporting to the House later on another measure that had gone through committee, Mr Bodkin, chairman oi committees, gave no indication as to what had happened to Mr Langstone's Bill, and this prompted Mr Howard (Christchurch South) to rise to a point of order.
“What has happened to the other Bill?” he asked. “You have not had any report, about that.” Mr Speaker: I am afraid the Hon member is asking me a question I cannot'answer. lam not supposed to know what take places in committee. “It was washed overbonrd,” said Mr Contes', leader of the Opposition.
hlii defence of the House and yourself, sir,’! said Mr Howard, rising to a further pojnt of order, “I demand that the committee shall, report what has been done in. committee,’ *
Mr Speaker.': No report is given' if a Bill is thrown out. “But this Bill was not thrown out,” remonstrated Mr M’Combs (Lyttelton).
Mr Speaker: Do I understand that the short title of tlie Bill was defeated? Members: Yes.
