DUNEDIN’S POST OFFICE. [By Telegraph, Per Press Association. DUNEDIN. Aug. 27. Hon W. B. Taverner states tenders will be called at the end of this year for the erection of the Dunedin Post Office, the foundations of which are nearing completion.
V FOUND SHOT. DUNEDIN, Aug. 27. Duncan McDonald, married, 53 years of age, and u resident of Palmerston, shot himself this afternoon. Deceased had been in ill health for some time and latterly was in a depressed state of mind. About 4 o’clock his wife left the house, but bearing a shot, returned and alter a search discovered deceased lying under a, tree on the lawn with a shotgun beside him' and the back ,of his head blown away, the gun apparently having been discharged by a string fastened from the trigger to his pocket. P.N. .CLAIM SUCCEEDS. WELLINGTON, August 27. An action to recover £950, allegedly overdue under promissory notes, was brought in the Supreme Court, before the Chief Justice, against the executors of the late Anthony Harper, bootmaker, of AVellington, bv a firm df merchants, alleging that Harper had promised to pay *,IOOO, and had not done so, except for £SOO. The defence was, mainly, that tne promissory notes were given for an illegal consideration i.e., that the agreement was not prosecutive. It was stated a former secretary, a friend of Harper, it was alleged, had admitted various defalcations to the company. His Honour gave judgment for the full amount with 50 guineas costs and disbursements, saying that it had been made clear to the Secretary at the uatset that it was never intended to prosecute. These ijnclude 47 men, 104 women and 67 children, under the age of 17. Of the women 72 are domestic servants and 35 of the. children have come out under the Church of England boys’ farming scheme.
A FAST PASSAGE. WELLINGTON. Aug. 27. Record time- for a. passage between Wellington and London for a cargo boat has been made by the Shaw Savill Coy’s Karamea, which left Wellington at 4.15 p.m. on July 22nd. and arrived at London at 9 o’clock on Saturday morning, the elapsed time, including stoppages, being 32 days 4 hours 22 minutes.. The actual steaming time was 31 days 12 hours 4 minutes. An average speed of slightly under 15 knots was maintained throughout the voyage. RADIO TESTS. WELLINGTON, Aug. 23. Radio enthusiasts who put their sets into operation early last evening were surprised to hear ; n unknown station pn the air. Many listeners did not realise that they were intruding on the preliminary test with the radio telephone apparatus on Tinakori Hill. The station was speaking to Sydney. As communication was simply experimental, at was picked up even by crystal sets. Tbe Wellington station was beard very clearly. Testing continues to-day.
FOUND DROWNED. CHRISTCHURCH. Aug. 28. . Kathleen Alary Francis Haggitt, aged 49. wife of Archdeacon Haggitt, of St. Alary’s, Morivale, was found drowned on the beach about a mile north of AVaimairi Surf Club’s pavilion at North Beach yesterday afternoon. Mrs Haggitt bad recently been a patient in a private hospital. HUAI AN REMAINS. RIVER BED TRAGEDY. PALMERSTON NORTH, August 23. Human remains, believed to be those of the young men Campblell and Huinan who were lost in a launch off Rangitikei Heads, were washed ashore yesterday on the south, side of the river mouth.
