COAL POSITION

STOCKTON MINE LOSES TRADE. (By Telegraph-*-Per Press Association.) WESTPORT, August 27. A serious position has developed at. the Westport Stockton Company's mine, consequent on the loss of the Railway Department’s orders. Up till a fortnight ago, the Company was contracting for stipply of 1300 tons oif coal per week. This has since been reduced to 300 tons weekly. With the settling of the strike in Ausralia, and the importation of Australia. coal, household orders for Stockton coal have almost ceased. In consequence the mines are likely to work only two or three shifts weekly, with a consequent loss to the Company, the miners, the railway revenues, the watersiders and the community generally. This condition of affairs is considered a striking commentary on the big advertisements in the city uewspapei s urging New Zealanders to purchase New Zealand goods.
