THURSDAY, AUGUST 28th. The-weather changed, last night and rain commenced to fall, and continued through the night and this morning. (Australian Press Association.) (Received this day at 8 a.m.) MELBOURNE, Aug. 27. The women’s £olf championship of Australian began to-day at the Commonwealth Links in ideal weather. There are players from the four States and Now Zealand. Miss LWray, the title-hdhler, and Mrs Gatehouse, a former champion, are among the competitors. The first of the two qualifying rounds were played. The New Zealander, Miss Kay, made an impressive appearance with a round of eighty-three, which included an eight at the simple fifth hole, sm pulled her drive among ounie trees. She had to play left-handed in an endeavour to recover and wasted three strokes. She got a six at the next hole and another at the seventh. Miss Leslie Bailley (Victoria) led at the end of the round witli 80. Miss Kay followed with 83. Then Miss Susie Tolhurst 84, Mrs Russell and Miss Wray 86, Miss Ratlibone (New Zealand) 89.
