BREACH OF DENTISTS ACT
MECHANIC FINED
HAMILTON, Aug. 22,
A case of interest to the dental profession was heard in the Magistrate’s Court to-day, when J. L. Shannon, dental mechanic, of Hamilton, was charged, with practising without a license and with issuing a deserpition to the public that he was practising dentistry.
The evidence on the second charge showed that defendant inserted an advertisement in a local newspaper under the caption “Dentistry,” claiming to do all classes of dental work.
After hearing expert and other evidence, the Magistrate held that defendant had committed a breach and was doing dental work for which he was not qualified. On the other charge the evidence showed that Walter Ellis Scott, a farmer, went to defendant lor an upper mot of teeth. Shannon had an itpiiprossion and fitting taken by a qualified dentist, who placed the teeth in Scott’s mouth.
After the final fitting the Magistrate held that defendant had not confined himself to mechanical work. The primary function of the Act was to protect the public, not the profession. Defendant was fined £2 on the second count and ordered to pay cow's, £6 9s, on both charges. ,
