(Australian Press Association.) PERTH, Aug. 25. X. Sell lam, aged 21 years, won the King’s Prize for Western Australia with a score of 329. 0. Tarrant was runner-up with a total of 323. Last year Schlain was runner-up for the same tronliv with a score of 324.

STOCKS SLUMP

SYDNEY, Aug. 25

Values fell away on the Stock Exchange to-day, and many stocks relapsed to new low levels. The market .finished with a very weak tone, and the supply of scrip available greatly exceeded the demand. The desire to realise was more pronounced than lor some time. Even preference stocks were out of favour. Bonds, however, are still steady.

CONSPJ RACY CO XVICTION QUASHED.

SYDNEY, Aug. 25. The Full Court has quashed the conviction of John Gunn and Allan Howden for conspiracy (in connection with an insurance company), as cabled on May 22. The Full Court has ordered a new trial.

ALLEGED ARSON. SYDNEY, August 26. A sequel to alleged preparations to set fire to a building in Bathurst Street cabled yesterday, was the arrest of a young man charged with having maliciously attempted to set fire to the premises of McAlister Brothers. Bial for £IOOO sterling was allowed.

THE £IOOO RISE. SYDNEY, August 26. Alderman McElhone has resigned the Chairmanship of the Citizens Reform Party in the City Council. By burning pulverised coal it is claimed that a saving of £2O sterling daily is affected in . the running costs of the new German freighter Stassfult of the Hamburg—America Line, which reached Sydney on her maiden voyage. A sist?T-ship. the Bitterfeld. burning ordinary coal carries ten more firemen and consumes more fuel. In future the Stassfult will use Australian coal for the return journeys. It is understood Manly ferries will instal plants and use pulverised coal. ’
