LATE SIR M. POMARE
FUNERAL SERVICE

WELLINGTON, Aug. 25
There was a large, representative attendance at the funeral service of the late Sir M. Pomare at St. Paul’s Pro-Cathedral. The principal mourners Avere Lady Pomare, her two sons and daughter, her mother, Mrs Woodbine Johnstone, Valid her sister, Mrs R. Sherratt. The Chief Justice, Cab--inet Ministers, members of all Ibranches of the Legislative and of the Departments were Mr A. C. Day represented Government Houpe. An address was given by Canon Williams, who said Sir M. Pomare Avas one 'who always had the welfare of his race at heart. ' The prominent positions avoh by members of the Maori race should be an encouraging assurance that all natives avlio possessed ability and diligently cultivated it had an equal opportunity with the pakeha of rising to the highest position. The casket hoav lies in ptate at Parliament House. A party of Maoris assembled on the steps and greeted it Avith a Availing ceremonial, and a Avelcome address was made to Lady Pomare by Sir A. Ngata, who afterwards led the mourning Maoris in a lament for the dead.
