NEGLIGENT DRIVING.
(By Telegraph—Per Press Association.. HAMILTON, Aug. 26. A collision between two cars on the Morrinsville-H'amilton road at Newstead on the evening of May Bth, in which a 'young man, Thomas Shaw was killed, led to the appearance of his cousin, Hector John Shaw, aged 20 years, in the Supreme Court at Hamilton on a charge of negligently driving the car as to cause death. Aftiir a retirement of three hours, the jury returned a verdict of guilty with a recommendation to mercy on account of prisoner’s youth, x
Evidence showed that the road was clear and both vehicles had a clear view of each other. Accused attributed his vehicle to skidding through striking a ,pot hole in the road. Sentence was deferred.
AN UNUSUAL ACTION. AUCKLAND, Aug. 26. An unusual action of a remanded man calling at a police station asking that he be brought before the Court immediately, was described, when Herbert Albert Edward Scott, aged 32, a tablet porter, was charged with stealing a handsaw, and obtaining sums totalling £3 by false pretences. Accused’s counsel said that against his advice accused pleaded guilty to all charges, saying lie had no hope and it was a case of his word against others. He (counsel) thought accused stote the saw but lie was not guilty of the other charges. Detective Scott told the police that if lie was left on bail he would go away in the Aorangi to America.
The Magistrate granted six months’ probation and ordered restitution.

WELLINGTON, August 2d
Professor .T. Hoops and Mrs Hoops arrived by the Makura yesterday morning on a brief visit to New Zealand as part of a world tour. Professor Hoops occupies, the Chair ol English Language and Literature at the Heidelburg University in Germany. This is his second’ trip round the world and it has embraced Havana, Jamaica, Peru, Costa, Rica, Mexico, and California. After eleven days in New Zealand the Professor and his wife will go to Australia and thence back to Germany, via Ceylon and India. At Havana Professor Hoops was the German delegate to Havana’s Univerity Jubilee and bicentenary. ' At the International Congress at the University of California, he held the position of visiting professor. Professor Hoops left for the South Island last night.
A LUCKY ESCAPE
CHRISTCHURCH, August 16.
While a light car was continuing a record breaking run from Auckland to Invercargill this morning, it skidded in some shingle ou Gret cutting, North Canterbury and somersaulted down a bank, The driver, A, McDonald was unhurt, but the observer H. Cuthbertson was knocked unconscious for twenty minutes, He recovered later and the oar was got back on the road on its own power and proceeded on its journey,
BLASTING ACCIDENT.

As the result of a blasting accident on Summit Rond, Arthur Roy Thomson, single, received extensive head injuries. His condition is serious. He placed a charge in a hole and an explosion occurred while he was covering it. ! ' '
HUNTERS MISSING.
TE KUIIII, Aug. 26
Anxiety is felt for three men, R. Knapp, J. Newton and E, Meredith, who went out on a hunting expedition in Pukemnko district near Mangapelli on Sunday and have not yet returned. Search parties have been out since Monday. The men are all Experienced butahmen and emplloyees at Ellis and Burnand’s mill.
NEGLIGENT DRIVING
AUCKLAND, August 26
Charged with negligent driving ana causing death, Robert John Burling, aged 24, a farmer of Pirihaka near Taumaranui, appeared at the Otahuhu Police Coifrt to-day. The charge arose out of an accident near Mnnurewa on August 2nd, when Charles Berry Simons was killed. The first witness said he heard defendant say after the accident, poor Charlie. He was my beat friend. In a signed statement produced defendant said: “My mind was practically a blank after I left Hamilton. My first recollection is seeing my mate on the road after the accident.”
Burling pleaded not guilty and was committed for trial.
The Magistrate reserved his decision in the charge against Burling of being intoxicated in charge of a car.
