UNEMPLOYMENT BILL DECISION
A UNANIMOUS PROTEST
(By Telegrupb—Per Press Association.!
WELLINGTON, Aug. 2G
A resolution was carried unanimously at the general Labourers’ Union last night protesting against “the decision in the Unemployment Bill to levy a flat tax of thirty shillings annually on the male section of the population to relieve unemployment. We consider this proposal is unjust and unfair to the minimum v, age worker, whose annual earnings are £IBO, and that it is obviously unjust to ask him to pay 80s annually, the same as persons with incomes ranging up to £20,000 a year.” It is considered that as workers are not responsible for the unemployment problem, they should not, be unjustly taxed to provide against its effects on the community and an appeal is made to labour organisations, hot!) industrial and political to “oppose this vicious principle and to Labour members-in Parliament to light the proposal tooth and nail.”
