TURNER CUP DEBATE

LADIES’ CLUB

The St. Mary’s Ladies’ Club hold the Turner Cup for the second year, in succession when they defeated the Men’s Debating Club last evening, by eight points, the scores being Ladies 241, Men 233. The debate was followed by an interested audience. The subject was “Batchelors Should be Taxed.” The following contested: Ladies (aff.) Misses E. Dale (leader), J. Wormington, K. Kennedy and J> Warrei;.! Men (neg.) Messrs B. Kempton (lead* er), J. Lynch, J. Stuart and J. Hutchison. !

Mr G. Wormington acted .as judge, and as on previous occasions, carried out. his work most efficiently. In giving his decision, in favour of the ladies tlie judge congratulated them on their win and said that they showed a marked improvement on their last year’s performance. Their matter. showed careful preparation and they brought out their arguments in a convincing manner. The men lacked preparation, but nevertheless were ; very good, Tli« ladies’ reply was very good and was much better than their opponents. Tak* en on the whole the debate,-, said judge, was splendid and the contestants were to be. congratulated on their efforts. ■

Rev. Father McKay, in the .pbsenco of Mr Turner,- who is away under medical treatment, presented the cup to the winners and extended congratulations. he said, took their club work seriously, and their win was well deserved) He. expressed regret*, that Mir Turner was unable to be present, and he hoped that he would soon ho restored to good health. The Rev, speaker also thanked the audience for their attendance and support.

Air Kempton, the leader of the bachelors . congratulated the spinsters on their win and Miss Dale acknowledged the compliments paid. A musical programme followed and was most enjoyable; the following rendering items:—Songs. Misses M. Haijrahan, E. Dale and J. Warren; Oration, Mr J. Lynch. Miss L. Dale made; an efficient accompanist. A daipty. .supper was served by the ladies and a short dance followed. .
