GREAT MOTOR RACE
FOR TOURIST TROPHY
k United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright,] LONDON, Aug. 23. Thrilling incidents marked the Tourist 'Trophy race for international competitors. The Italian Alfaroma’s team proved overwhelmingly victorious in the race, which was one of 420 miles, run over a fourteen mile circuit, at Belfast.
Nuvolari was first with a speed of seventy point eighty-eight miles an hour. Campari came second with a speed of 70.82 miles an hour. Varze was third with a speed of 70.31 miles an hour.
Birkin and Kaye Don both competed. They met with accidents. Captain Waite, in an Austin lapped the Ballystock Bridge at too great a speed, and the car overturned into the crowd. Captain Waite, who was underneath the ear, was removed unconscious.
Kaye Don was also removed unconscious. Kaye Don was in an Alfar Romeo car. He struck a bridge. The car leapt into the air, overturned and then caught fire. Don was rescued when he was actually being scorched. He had a rib broken. A frantic rush followed the smash to remove the burning car from the path of the other cars, winch were travelling at nearly 100 miles an hour.
K. ,S. Peacock, in a Lea Francis car, skidded practically the whole length of the main street of jSTewtonards, and ended up by partially demolishing a butcher’s shop. The greatest tragedy for the British hopes was when Captain Bmlin,-in a Bentley car, was striving to overtake the Italians, approaching BalbyStockart Bridge. The near side front wheel came off. The car, crashing into a wall, was partially wrecked. The crowd was amazed to see Birdin step out only dazed. . The police estimated that there were half a million people on the course. Fifteen hundred constables patrolled the course magnificently. The Italians set. a hectic pace. The skids became terrifying. The race became most tense when heavy rain made the course as slippery as glass. Unbelievable risks were taken hv the three dare-devil Italians when roundracing one another, the crowd generously cheering them over every yard of the course.
