In his annual report to Parliament, the Postmaster-General (Mr Donald) ‘states that the revenue collected during the year exceeded that for the previous year by £196,095. The; working expenses amounted t 0£3,111,155, while an amount of £500,000, was invested for the purpose of renewal and replacement of existing assets, thus leaving a balance of receipts over payments of £30,421. Interest on capital liability which is included in working expenses amounted to £481,000, an increase of £52,000 on the amount paid for the previous year. £2,800 FOR PLUNKET HOSPITAL DUNEDIN, August 22, The Trustees,' Executors and Agency Cqy., Ltd., the trustees in the estate of the late Robert Hay, have forwarded a cheque for £2,500 to the Dunedin Branch of the Plunket Society, which sum was bequeathed under the will of the late Mr Hay to the endowment fund of the Karitane Harris Hospital, in memory of . The Postmaster-General’s annual report , states that the outstanding feature of the telephone business was the increased use of the telephone fbr toll purposes. The total number of calls exceeded 11,000,000 reresenting an increase of over 7 per cent. The toll revenue amounted to £482,571, an increase of approximately , nine per cent. The erection of five post office buildings was completed during the year, and additions and alterations were made to some eighteen existing buildings. “ \ THE LATE SIR GEORGE HUNTER. WAIPUKURAU, August 22. The funeral of Sir George Hunter left St. Mary’s Anglican Church here yesterday morning, a public service being conducted by Canon E. D. Rice. The crowd was too large to accommodate in the church, so the coffin was placed outside. The Vicar eulogised the life of the deceased, and said he was generous to a degree, and said he to returned soldiers. Mr Campbell (Hawkos Pay) represented the Reform Party, and a Minister, Hon. Mr Murdoch, the Government. The Jockey Club Stewards acted as pall bearers. The town closed during the service, and flags were at half mast. lease from the Inebriates Home on Rotoroa Island, was called in the Supreme Court, Mr justice Smith said he was unable to give judgment then, as had been expected when the hearing concluded- on -Monday, as he had to proceed to Hamilton at the end of this week. It would be some time before judgment could be delivered. He directed that the applicant should be released on bail until September 6th. LAND SALESMAN’S THEFT. CHRISTCHURCH, August 22. In the Supreme Court to-day Charles Henry Lee Walter was convicted on a charge of having received £IOO on terns requiring him to pay it to John McLeod, and of having failed to do so, thereby committing theft. Walter, acting os a land salesman, received a cheque for £IOO as a deposit on a sale of McLeod’s property. He cashed the cheque, but failed to hand over either the total sum to his principal or the total sum less commission, although frequent applications were made to him for it. Walter was sentenced to imprisonment for eighteen months. A BOXER 'COLLAPSES. PALMERSTON N., Aug. 23. During the progress of the Boxing Championships last evening, 'P. Rush (Blenheim) competing in the heavyweight class, collapsed during an interval between a bout with R. Nico.l (Southland) and was carried from the ring unconscious. He was admitted to the hospital, undergoing an operation. At an early hour this morning his condition was stated to be serious. The bout was not strenuous and Rush did not appear to receive a blow to cause any serious injury to the head which would account for the collapse.
