ON THE VERGE.
HOPE OF SUCCESS AT 5000 FEET. AUCKLAND, Aug. 19. An inspection of the drilling operations for oil being carried out at Omata, near New Plymouth, is to be made by Mr R. J. Lea Wright, of Sydney, a director of Coal Oil (N.Z.), Ltd., who arrived by the Ulimaroa. Nothing was beiug left to chance in connection with the company’s operations in the field, said Mr Wright. The site had been selected on the recommendation of scientists whose survey under the El'bof geophysical method had cost • £SS,OQG|. The drilling plant being used was capable of carrying the bore to 8000 ft if necessary. A very large size of casing, '2lin, had been used at the commencement, and this would • enable Bin casing to be carried down to 4500 ft. With the bore down to about 2000 ft? shows of oil and gas had been obtained.
Mr Wright said on the basis of scientific reports it was believed that oil might be found between the' 2000 ft and 4000 ft levels, but the main supply was thought to exist at a depth ■of at least 5000 ft.
