PARLIAMENTARY.
(By Telegraph—Press Association). THE COUNCIL. WELLINGTON, Aug. 23. In the Legislative Council the Land and Income Tax (Annual) Bill and Land and Income Tax Amendment Bill were received from the House of iHisprasentatives 'and passed without amendment.
The debate was continued on Defence (Temporary) Amendment Bill which was defeated on the second reading, the amendment, of Sir J. Allen being carried by 17 to 9, that the Bill be read a second time in six months time. THE HOUSE. In the House of Representatives ‘tip following Bills were introduced and read a first time:— Industrial Conciliation find Arbitration Amendment Bill (Minister of Labour). Destitute Persons Amendment Bill (Mr Barnard). Th© following estimates were passed:— Prime Minister’s Department, £13,900. Treasury Department, £38,900. National Provident and Friendly Societies Department, £25,000. State Advances Department, £Bl,291. The Speaker reported the result of the Invercargill bye-election and the new member Mr Vincent Ward took the oath. The Leaders of the Opposition parties took the opportunity to express host wishes for the success of the Prime Minister at the Imperial Conference. Mr Forbes replying expressed appreciation of the co-operation that had been accorded by the other narties in getting contentious legislation through. / The House rose at 5.30 p.m, till 2.30 p.m. on Tuesday.
