OPOSSUM TRAPPING
CLOSE. SEASON NEXT YEAR. An intimation that next year would probably be a- close season for opossum trapping was made at the Wellington .Acclimatisation Society meeting recently, when a- suggestion that the present season should, be extended was being considered. Air L. 0. H. Tripp said that reports had been received from various licenseholders that a close season would be advisable on account- of the number of animals taken, and lie ha'* been told by Westland trappers that- it might be necessary to have two close seasons in the district.
The Internal Affairs Department wrote stating that the Minister had received an application from a Kaitoko resident- for the season to he extended for at least six weeks. The society stated that it was opposed to the suggestion . The SouthWairarnpa sub-committee recommended that next- season should be a close one for pheasants, and that the pukeko season should be from June 16 to 30, but the society declared it waa not- in favour of an open season for pukeko, though shooting permits would he granted where there wa.S proof that the birds had wrought damage.
