" Found last evening with his throat cut, in a paddcck in Sar Street Wadesknown, was taken to the hospital in an tinconcious .state. A RAZOR, TRAGEDY Taken to the hospital on Wednesday evening, after lie had been found in a paddock in Sar Street, Wadestown, in an unconcious condition, with his throat cut, Thomas Spilnian, aged 41, single, a tunneller, living at 76 Birougham Street, died at 3.15 this afternoon Little is known of the dead man’s recent movements, and his identity was not known until some little time after he had been admitted to the hospital. A blade of a razor was 'found nearby. An 'inquest will be held. MOTOR CAR TRAGEDY MASTER TON, August 21. A verdict of accidental death was returned by Coroner E, G. Eton, at the inquest at Tinui to-day, on Wilfred Wrigley Payne, the P .and T. officer of Masterton, who was killed in the motoriug accident near Tinui on Wednesday night. There were no eye-wit- ' nesses of the accident, but there were marks of a skid on the rond. Deceased was pinned underneath the vehicle, which was 'found upside down on the road,
HOUSES DESTROYED. DARGAVILLE, Aug. 32. Late last night a fire at Ragley's Gorge, a seaside resort some seven miles from town, destroyed two residences, the property of Mrs John Pin-, layson and Samuel Barker. The glare was noticed in town by a motorist, who had been attending a meeting, and went out and found FinlaysO'Ts house well ablaze and Barker’s partially. A few contents of the latter were saved but both houses, owing to the lack of water supplies, are a total loss. The adjoining house though scorched is undamaged. The insurance on the two houses is £2OO each.
FRAUDULENT SOLICITOR. GISBORNE, Aug. 22. “I recognise that, the severest part of the punishment will be that you will be removed from the roll of solicitors, but that is not sufficient, and it is my duty to impose a term of imprisonment,” said Justice Reed, when Robt. George Gardener 1 Bain., aged 26, a barrister and solicitor, appeared before him at the Supreme Court this morning for sentence for theft by fraud. His Honor remarked .that the punishment must be such as would act as a deterrent to others against interfering with their clients money, and ordered that Bain bo detained for reformative purpose® for twelve months. Bain pleaded guilty in the Lower Court to twenty charges of fraudulently omitting to account for moneys received, thereby committing theft, The total amount of the defalcation was approximately £6OO,
'WELLINGTON CITY COUNCIL. WELLINGTON, Aug. 22. The discovery that there was an unexpended balance of unemployment relief work loans amounting to £40,000 sterling, at the same time. as a 'ecommendation was tabled that preparation be made to raise another £25,000 for unemployment relief, provoked the criticism of the Works Committee at last night’s meeting of the City Council, and calls were made for an investigation to include the Engineering Department. The clause was taken back by the Committee that brought it forward. Authority was granted by the City Council last night for an amendment of the by-laws to provide for the annual license fees for sports grounds au-omntodating .ten thusand persons and under twenty thousand, to be increased from £2 2s to £2O sterling and those holding twenty thousand or over to £3O sterling per annum. It as explained that the increases were necessitated by the tremendous amount of extra work involved in regulating large crowds towards the cost of which the Council received nothing from the sports bodies, A DIVORCE. £350 DAMAGES GRANTED. WELLINGTON, Aug. 22. In a divorce case, in which Sydney Kingsford sought a divorce from his wife ,Ivy Kingsford, and from Edward Harry Harten, who was cited as co-respondent, £IOOO sterling damages, the jury returned a verdict for £350 sterling. A new trial was moved for by counsel for the two defendants (1) on grounds of wrongful admission of an hotel book, and (2) on the ground of wrongful direction as to connivance.
