OF RETIRING CHAIRMAN. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, August 20. Hon, Harry Atmore, Minister of Education, has telegraphed as follows to Mr R. W. 0. Smith, chairman of the Nelson Education Board for the past sixteen years, who was succeeded on Monday last by Hon. W. Mclntyre, as chairman of the Board: “I have read the report in a local newspaper of altered positions, due to change in chairman of the Nelson Education Board, and I think it is a fitting time to express my appreciation of the very cordial relations in all our dealing, in Educational matters, during the time that I have had the honour of holding the portfolio of Education. I feel sure, the general public recognise the services you have rendered to the great cause of education, and I am confident you will give many more years of honourable service, for which your long experience and active interest so fit you. Changes must take place in administrative matters, and it may he that in those changes of the near future, opportunity will offer for you to place your experience, ability and singleness of purpose, at the disposal of people in more honourable and responsible capacity I
