Pearce and Wright shot into the lead, Wright holding a quarter of a length lead on the Australian at the half-way mark, then Pearce’s long powerful strokes carried him on even terms. Fifty yards from the finish Wright’s shell nearly collided with Pearce’s and he stopped pulling. Pearce showed a clear win by several vards.
Lachine, of the Rowing Club, Montreal, defeated Hamilton Leanders (ouo forty pounds) eight* oared by inches. Whelpton of the Leanders won the international (one forty pounds) single sculls. At Hamilton,'Bob Pearce (Australia) won the .special quarter mile dash from a field of five rowers including Joe Wright (Canadian singles champion, and former diamond sculls winner) at the opening of the rowing at the Empire Games.
