CHINESE CRISIS
N 0 RTHERNER S 1? ETREAT. [United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copy r igh t. ] SH ANG HA 1, August 18. With the Shansi forces evacuating the province of Shantung, alter the full of Tsinan, the Nationalist Government at Nanking claims that the Northerners are leaving Lianfeng, which they have held for the whole campaign, they now intend to retire along Lunghi front. If this is true, it i.s expected that the Northerners will yield Haifeng and Chang, how, making a stand in the vicinity of Loyang. Marshal Chian Kai Shek has strongly reinforced the southern troops, the previous removal of which led to the late Communist risings in Kinngsi and Hunan; and with 12 tanks, which he purchased in Britain, the Marshal is now in undoubtedly a superior position to the Kuominc-hun, which is badly depleted in effective and material. It i.s generally believed, however, that the Nanking Government is too optimistic, and that there is much to . do.
