THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.
•:•••• -THE' INDIAN situation. General indications suggest that the internal crisis in India has for., moment- passed- its point of ‘ *’. tiop. u - Whether these paroxysms J violence will be-chronic and • ititefr-”"■ mittent it is - not’yet possible to u '',“ but it is evident, that the age-old animosity between Hindu and Moslem has now become an important factor in the anti-British agitation. Meantime, a distinctly dangerous situation lias developed on the North-West frontier, where the kill tribes beyond the.border line seem to have been stirred to unwonted activity. Large forces of Afridis—irreclaimable rob-berS“-ivho maintain themselves by • plunder and live largely for the joy #*7 of fighting— have gathered near Pe-Cr shawar, and, though attacked by bombing planes, - threaten to assault the city. T( is not clear how far the hill-men are urged on by the hope of spoil and to what extent they have •„ been starred up by Bolsehevik agents K’ f ' 3 whose "hctivities have been frequently reported from these regions. They are great fighters, brave and reckless; fatalists, who put no value upon humanl life; but the forces available,.. having received ample warning, should be easily able to hold the frontier against them. . .■ - .
