The Whangareri Hospital Board does not agree with .people who regard book debts as assets. For some years past overdue accounts on the books have approximated £12,000. At the meeting of the board it was admitted that, the recovery of a portion of the debts was hopeless owing to circumstances of the debtors, but it was felt that a considerable sum should 'be recovered. The chairman remarked that he knew one debtor to have two: bridge parties in one day. This is not fair to the ratepayers. The board decided that the legal committee should analyse the accounts and take steps to recover • debts owing by those able to pay.
A new type of concrete paving slab is being used in Auckland for surfaceing the street footpaths. The new slabs are designed to prevent pedestrians slipping which is a. common occurrence with the smooth concrete slabs at present in use, and they have been put down in front of the Bank of New Zealand in Queen street and Yorkshire House in Shorthand street. The upper surface has a roughened appearance, brought about in the mould, and affords the foot an excellent grip. If the strips now being laid prove a success further similar paving will be' done in different parts of the city.
