JUNIOR, REP MATCH

The conditions on Saturday aftoinoon at Cass Square,' Hokitika wore u ni'a von ruble for the junior rep foot- , ball match between Grey and West-r land teams, rain falling during a good part of the game. The Grey fifteen, were unequal in the forwards to tlnp home team, and this disparity was the main reason why Westland won the game by 19 to nil. ! West-land forwards early ,fiecame dangerous in rushes but the visitors also took a. turn at attack, though they were soon placed on the defensive.,, Several times when Gordon sent our, tile ball the opposing pack, led .by the wing-forward, CL Wright engaged in spoiling tactics. From a forward rush;, tlie ball came out to J. Wright, who. registered the first try. which Hamilton failed to convert. Grey had a good custodian in Liiidbom. who handled and kicked with safety,, while Smith also defended well at- centre, but the West-land fifteen continued to do the attacking and before half time Wright gained another try which Hamilton converted. In the second spell D'iedrich from a passing movement, put in a dodgy run that took him over and soon after Hamilton handed a penalty' goal. The final score --"qyasgained by Schroder, who fielded a bouncing' ball smartly and ran in for a good try; which was converted: Grey ; made, an occasional offensive, -but eouldnot penetrate the defence although'the 7 visiting backs were probably; not' in-'-: ferior to those of the winners/oiThe best were Lindbom, Gordon and Smith, while Wilson and SbuttleWo'ftb were noticeable forwards. For Westland, all of the three-quarters. Heinz; Diecltiefife and Schroder player well, as did all of the forwards, and it would be hard tb single any one out, except perhaps, -T. Wright. There was not very much combination on the part of either side, 1 -' although Diedricbs at times oil re- : - ceiving smartly from Hughes, started' passing movements, but the greasy hall was against safe transfers. Bothsides made good use of line-kicking l hut the winners had t-o much strength in the loose play for Grey. Mr Moracontrolled the ganhe in ait able’ 'triad 1 -'

R ANFURLY SHIELD

SOUTHLAND WIN AGAIN v

INVER CAR GILL, August 1(5.,. The third challenge match for the Raiifurly Shield, between Southland and Hawkes Bay, was .played- at Rugby Park to-day, and resulted ini.a win for the holders by nine points’ to

six. The playing conditions .were.;air most perfect, there being no . sun, or wind. The attendance was • estimated at 7000. The only sensation was when Wanoa was ordered off.

It was early evident that the visitors were out for the Shield, while the tearji fielded was their best combination. Hawkes Bay had led by six tO'Wtri- 3at half-time, and they were unlucky m not making it larger. Southland won with three penalty kicks to a try and a penalty”.. Tfisy could not cross Hawkes Bay line/tbut their bad; play was superior. Hawke’s Ray kept the play as tight as possible, ami tried little open work. Although an even game, it nearly went to Hawkes Bay, who put in the most determined hid yet made for the Shield. The match was grimly spectacular, with the interest always tense, Hawkes Bay’s kicking was superlative, and constantly changed defence into attack. .There were several stoppages for injuries, and Gillespie lfad to he carried off. After Wanoa was ordered off, the advantage of the play swung in Southland’s direction, and many exciting movements were witnesed. Too ninth cannot be said for Hawkes Bay’s defence, which time after time averted, what looked like certain tries. ,

Brownlie and Greenside impressed in a side that plays as a team. Haslett and Bell headed many movements, for Southland, while all the local hacks ! handled well. An advantage in weight frequently gave Hawkes Bay predom-. inance in the line-outs and the scrums. I ■ X
