The Totara Hall presented a colourful and animated scene on Friday evening when the Fire Brigade Annual Ball took place. The hall was nicely decorated with coloured streamers and evergreens, and with the many charming frocked dancers created quite a gay appearance.
The music, which was supplied by Miss Parker’s Ross Orchestra of six instruments, was second to none, and contributed much to the success of the evening. Mr R. Richards had charge of the floor and carried out his duties in a very capable manner. At midnight an enjoyable supper was suppied, and the dance continued to about 3 a.m. ROSS LIME. WORKS.
The "Diesel engine for use at the Ross Lime Coy’s works is now on the ground and is being installed. The concrete foundation has been completed, and ns soon as this sets the engine will he erected, and should be working ! in about a month’s time.
The engine, which is 28 li.p, will provide ample power, for present needs, and somothng to spare for future developments. An energetic policy is now being pursued at the works and the aim is to give as good services as possible so that there will be the minimum of delay in fulfilling orders. A tractor, kindly lent by Mr .T. McIntosh, lias been used by this company for the past month or two to supply the power for crushing, and lias proved most satisfactory. Formerly water power has been used for tin’s purpose, but this has been a very scarce commodity of late. VISIT OF DEAN.
The,Dean of Christchurch, hotter known to many a.s Archdeacon .Tillins. will he visiting the Const Inter thL month, and will induct the Rev. .T Knight as Vicar of Hokitika. Dean Julius will conduct services at Hariliari on Wednesday. 27th inst., and at Ross at 7 p.m. on Thursday 28th inst. TIMBER WORKERS. Air S. Gladstone who is a candidate for tiie office of .secretary-treasurer for the Timber "Workers Union addressed about -JO members of the Timber Union at the Totara Hall on Sunday evening.. Air R. Clierrie occupying the chair. At the conclusion of an interesting address mid the answering of several questions, a vote of confindence was carried unanimously, a. vote of thanks to the chair concluded the meeting. One of the questions asked Air Gladstone was if he was returned as their officer would he he in favour of purchasing ‘-Cannonball.” THE RAINFALL. Our rainfall which averages about 1,50 inches per year is losing its reputation. For tile past months we have had only about 42 inches and for To days of this month less than a quarter of an inch lias been recorded.
