THE FIRST THAMES STEAMER

The following is taken front a newspaper dated July Ist, 1.801: ~ “Air experiment took place on: the. Riyer Thames for the purpose, of working a. barge or any other heavy: craft against,tide by means of a steam-engine en a; very simple'construction. The moment the engine was set to work, the barge was brought about, answering her helm quickly; and she made way against a. strong current, at' the rate of two miles and a half an hour.”

STRANGE TRANSPORT,

In the vast army'' 1 of forgotten inventors is one, aMr Moore, who demonstrated the advantages of trans--. port by carts with Avheels of lafge diameter. On July 19th, 1771, he experimented with a cart hung between two fifteen feet diameter wheels, and carried coal, making four successive journeys, between De Paiba’s wharf in Thames Street and his house in Cheapside. The cart was drawn by two horses abreast and was loaded with two chaldrons anil two sacks (26 cwt.) and travelled with much more ease and expedition than an ordinary cart drawn by three horses harnessed in tandem loaded with only one chaldron (12 cwt.)
