WITNESSED BY THE .KING

LONDON, August 7

A tragedy occurred in the yacht race at Cowes, in which the King’s yacht Britannia was competing. The King being aboard, lie witnessed the accident.

It occurred when the 21-metre yachts were rounding a buoy, and while tlie 12-metres craft were jockeying for positions at the starting .line, awaiting the gun. The Lulworth crashed into the Lueilla, and they became locked together, enabling six of the Lueilla’s crew to clamber on to the Lulworth, after which the smaller Lucillia broke away and sank like a stone. The Lucilla’s . steward ! had been knocked unconscious by a blow on the head. He fell overboard, and was drowned. The Lulworth abandoned the race but the remainder went on. The Eirittania was far ahead at the moment of the-accident.
