THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.
BETTER TIMES COMING. : The economic conditions of the world to-day. are in a deplorable state, and appear to defy analysis, and yet there are some people who believe that betters times are coming. Of course, better times must make their appearance for we cannot go on as we are. In the United Kingdom the economic outlook is bad,„.\fpr:\ the position revealed by -the June statistics according to the ‘‘Economist,’ is more discouraging than those for .May. Therefore there is evidence of a. general loss of; confidence. , The British coal, steel, and shipping industries, are very .much depressed; jin Germany the position is equally as bad if not worse, for unemployment is In- ' creasing, and heavy additional ta*a* tion has been .imposed. In ; the United States turnover is shrinking, profits are smaller, bankrupt- • cies are increasing, and unemployment is expanding. In June the Ford factories in Detroit, which were turning out 9200 motor vehicles daily, were closed down for a fortnight, which gives some indication of the position of affairs in America.
