The interview of the delegation of the Motor Boat Club with the Borough Cbuucili last week regarding certain matters at Lake Kanieri, attracted attention "to the general situation in that locality. The point raised against the Motor Boat Club’s house occupying the situation it does, was not considered a menace to the public health by the Council. The town water supply is derived from Lake Kanieri in the vicinity, but quite remote enough and deep enough, to be harmless so- far as the club house is concerned. The permission for the erection of the Club house was given by the proper authorities m years gone by, and in the connection in which it was granted, the building would have been in much greater use than is now the case. In quite recent times also, since the controversy over the matter has arisen, verbal permission has been given on behalf of the authorities for another erection in dose juxtia-pcjsition, so that it would appear for some reason the matter is being unduly stressed so far as the Motor Boat Club house is concerned. It in quite proper that, there should l>e control in these matters, but nil the circumstances should be taken into .account. Regarding Lake Kanieri itself, it must become more and more, a popular rendezvous. It is a notable asset, and it is perhaps remarkable that it is not more patronised than it is. No doubt it wid grow in public favour, and it will be the duty of. the authorities to see that any menace in the matter is not aggravated. If that is done all should he well. In connection with the Lakeside, the point arose that there is a crying need for public conveniences at the lake, It Seems a great mistake to dally over attention to that obvious necessity, The position as it is: encourages a menace, and .the authorities should take up the matter, and see that the want is met. . Probably there is some difficulty in fixing the responsibility for the expenditure involved, but as Lake Kanieri is a notable tourist resort, and as the Tourist Department has acknowledged obligations in other respects in that locality the Department should be the proper body to attend to this urgent requirement. Lake Kanieri, it is every reason to expect, will grow in popularity, and the patronage to the ’lakeside must increase. For that reason something must be done, and it should be done quickly. Now that the roading to the lake, and about the lake is being improved, so much, traffic will always be on the upward grade, and the urgency of the matter' referred to is becoming more and more intensified, and the public duty should be discharged without further delay.
