ECLIPSE OF THE SUN
NEW ZEALAND EXPEDITION. SUM OF £7200 IN SIGHT. t WELLINGTON. Aug. 11. A sum of £7200, which will carry a Government subsidy of £ for £, is definitely in /sight by the New Zealand' Astronomical Society towards the cost of the expedition to Niaufou, A further £.IOO is required and the society is making a determined effort to l collect this. Of the subscriptions received by the society, totalling £159 9s 6d, Wellington’/* 'share is £6O l'Os, Christchurch has given £l2 18s 6d, Dunedin £l3 12s 6d and Auckland £2B 11s, The American and New Zealand expeditions will be the only ones on Niaufou, which is in the ! belt of totality. The American expedition is to be led by Commander C. H. J. Keepler. Professor S. A. Mitchell, of the Leander M’Cormick Observatory, Virginia University, is the leading scientist. The New Zealanders will leave Auckland by the Niagara probably on September 23 and will travel from Suva to Niaufou by the Laburnum, arriving at the beginning of Oetdber.
