RECEIVING STOLEN GOODS, [By Telegraph, Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 5. For receiving stolen goods knowing them to have been stolen, William Roy Burns, aged 31, married, a dealer, was sentenced by Magistrate Mosley to three months’ hard labour. “Receiving stolen goods is as bad as stealing them,” said the Magistrate. THEFT OF LIQUOR. TAIHAPE, Aug. 5. ... Breaking into the storeroom after arousing, and being refused liquor by the licensee of Gretna Hotel, Taihape, about 3 o’clock on Monday morning, Relit. Boyd, aged 23, and John Warren, aged 31, stole a case of British stout, opened the case on the roadside, drank freely and hid the rest in a culvert.
An hour earlier they attempted to break into the Main Trunk Brewery. The lock resisted all efforts. Warren was arrested on the river bank drinking from a bottle. Boyd was arrested at home, with bottles in his possession.
Both appeared before Justices at Court this morning. Boyd, with five previous convictions, was sentenced to six months. Warren', a married man, living apart' from his wife, with one previous conviction, received three months. . .
FOUND HANGING
STRATFORD, Aug. 5
A farm labourer, Ernest Soutbam Beckwith, aged 23, was found dead this morning hanging from a road sign at Tutmvera, by his cardigan jacket.
SUPREME COURT SENTENCES
DUNEDIN, Aug. 5.
Prisoners sentenced in the Supreme Court were: Frederick Hector Armishaw, breaking, entering, theft, two years’ Borstal. , . Howard William Thomas, for breach of his probation, was admitted to a further three years’ probation. GOODS STOLEN FROM SHIP. , DUNEDIN, Aug. 5. A big haul of ladies’ silk underclothing was stolen from the hold of an overseas steamer after arrival at Pori Chalmers a few days ago. The goods, which consisted of 614 articles, had been removed at night and stowed in an unoccupied room. Several pairs of boots were included. Evidently the articles were to be taken ashore as the opportunity offered.
THEFT CHARGE.
CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 6
Herbert Ormond Lawrence, aged 30, a labourer, appeared on remand before Magistrate Mosley, charged with the theft of £BO from the Addington Post Office. Witnesses alleged that accused, while in the Post Office on business, reached over the counter while a clerk was busy and snatched the money, bolting down the street. He was arrested after a chase, the money being found in a hedge! He pleaded not guilty and was committed for trial.
