THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.
THE BUDGET DEBATE. While the Leader of the Opposition may be fairly congratulated on the tone and temper of his speech on the Budget, he did not add anything of material weight- to the criticisms already advanced against it. The amendiment. moved by Mr Coates emphasised three main points—the expenditure of the Highways Fund or backblock roads, the failure of the proposed tariff to provide adequately for Imperial Preference, and the probable rise in the cost of living to the consumer, owing to admipistrative extravagances and heavy taxation combined. The weakness of Mr Coates’ attack lav in the fact that he indulged in vague generalities, carefully avoided statistical' and ..financial details, and' asY carefully abstained from suggesting .anything in the way of a practicable alternative to the methods of revenue r«aising outlined in the Budget.
