A VETERAN PASSES. A soldieivin the New Zealand forces at the age of 18, Edward Charles Meredith died on Sunday at New Plymouth at the age of 84. It was the murder of his father and brother by the Maoris on July 14, 1864, near Drury, which began the Waikato War. After the murder, Mr Meredith transferred to Wanganui, joining a native contingent under Cd’onel McDonnell as a Colour-Sergeant. In 1866 he was present at the taking of Wereroa, Papiriki, and Opotiki. His company advanced and fought at Turn, and Turumokai, where Colonel Hnssard was killed.
