BOOKMAKERS FINED. [By Telegraph, Per Press Association.j WANGANUI, Aug, 4. Frank Sanko and Matthew Carrol described by the police as moderate bookmakers, were fined £lO each in default one month PETROL PRICES. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 4. Retailers of petrol in. Christchurch are reaping a good harvest at the expense of motorists. Their profit is one penny, a gallon more than they made before the imposition of the additional tax. Oil companies it is stated, notified retailers that the price of petrol would be advanced by twopence per gallon, they having agreed to hear one penny of the extra tax. Despite that; retailers are selling at 2s la and 2s, instead of at 2s and Is lid.

WELLINGTON. Aug. 4
Before Air Woodward, S.M., to-day Ra'p Ellis Thompson, aged 50, and Thomas Philips, aged 58, pleaded guilty to bookmaking, charges. The Magistrate said Phillips was convicted three months ago when he was fined £250. Thompson also had two convictions and was fined £2OO previously. H© fined each defendant £3OO, in default six months. August. Hjulmnr Peterson, aged 33. and Thomas Quin, aged 35, charged with keeping a common gaming house, .were remanded to 11th August on bail of £IOO.
CARS COLLIDE,
PALMERSTON N., August 4
A collision early this' afternoon between a service car and another motor vehicle occurred at the inter-section of ivangitigei Street and the Square.
Miss Nora Nottingham, of Christchurch, a passenger in the service car, was removed to the hospital suffering from shock arid concussion. The other passengers were slightly injured.
.... CROSSING SMASH. WANGANUI, Aug. 4. A motor collided with the Castlecliff Railways" Company’s train at a crossing this*'inornitig- The car was carried sixteen feet by jtlie engine. The driver of the car, W. J. Gilbert, escape injury , but , Edna Crease and Gladys Jones, both passengers, were injured, the'former'receiving a broken arm arid collarbone and the latter bodily injuuies. r ''Both ladies were liOspitalled. , cSUPREME COURT SENTENCES DUNEDIN, Aug. 4. Judge Kennedy sentenced the following prisoners;'— ' John Charles Toonum. a young man, married/ on f fiv e charges of theft as a postal officer, to one 'year reformative. ' Doris May Adams. 22, receiving stolen draper, two years Borstal. Frederick William Many a young man, two charges of indecently assaulting .girls,/ to qne year reformative. Augustus Bates ,a youth/ for breakiing, entering and theft, three years probation. Kevin Hugh Mooney, ager 16, indecently assaulting a girl and also assault, to three years probation.
THEFT CHARGE. DUNEDIN. Aug. 4
In the Police Court James Miller George Johnson for theft of goods valued at £4 sterling was sentenced to twelve months reformative. The Probation Officer reported that accused was a menace to business people, and quite incorrigible.
