EARTHQUAKES AND VOLCANOES. There is no trace whatever of volcanic action in Wellington, Dr Marshall told the Wellington Rotary Club. Dr Marshall was for 16 years Professor of Geology at the Otago University and he has Visited most of the volcanoes in Japan and Java. In an address on “Volcanic Activity,” Dr Marshall said that geologists know the volcanic history of Wellington for 60 million years and there was no trace of volcanic action. That seemed a long time by the measure of human life, but it was not so long by geological standards. No relation between earthquakes and volcanic action had been established. After the recent earthquake in Italy, heresy hunters endeavoured to lay the blame at the door of volcanic activity, but were unable to do so. Scientists were far too ignorant at present to be able to forecast earthquakes or volcanic eruptions. Volcanic action was liable ,tb occur at any time. In Rotorua, football and cricket were played on the bed of an old volcano which might blow up at any moment.
