THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.
THE DIFFICULTY OF ECONOMY.;
; As Professor y Btelsiiaw said - in. his comments—supporting our. own remarks.; on the Budget—it is difficult to. believe that any ve.ry considerable eco,/pmies could be achieved in a short space of time without injuring, the efficiency of the service., Moreover, every large “cut” brings protests, as We have seen in the case of the Defence reduction. jOrities who demand economy are apt-tp question some of;the practical applications of the remedy, they press. AVe hope., however, .that Mr Forbes will keep the closest ,eye. on the stnffiwr of the. Civil Service, and that he will remember Gladstone’s dictum that np; Chancellor is worth-his salt who does no economise, incandle ends. But when this is said it. remains true that more taxation is neces*ar.v to balance tne national accounts and, that the. only• alternative is |o borrow to cover the deficit. ..- . , . —Auckland Star. .
