BONDI SURF TRAGEDY
(Australian Press Association.) SYDNEY, July 30. A surf-bather, Herbert Stephens aged 30, was seized with cramp at Bondi Bench, and was drowned. His friend, Robert Wilson, aged 22, made repeated plucky- attempts to rescue Stephens, and was himself nearly drowned. Eventually he was brought from the water unconscious.

OPERATES AUGUST tet. CANBERRA, Jute 30. Unexpectedly the Prime Minister Mr J. 11. Scullin, introduced the Sales Tax -Bill • in the House of Representatives to-day. Last week, being the second week in which tlie new primage and special duties operated, the Customs receipts showed a decline of about seventy-five per cent, compared with the corresponding period of the week last year, being £338,000 compared with £1,131,000.
