MEAT VENDOR FINED

LONDON, July 30,

Hall and Sons, of Buckingham Palace Road, were fined 20s and £lO stealing costs for supplying Hon. Paul Methven with an Argentine leg of mutton as New Zealand. Mr G. D. Roberts, prosecuting on behalf of the New Zealand Meat Board said Methven, who was an investigator of meat for the Ministry of Agriculture, habitually examined all meat sent to his home. He turned over the leg and discovered an Argentine brand. A DIPLOMA GAINED. LONDON, July 30. Mi.ss Gladys Watkins of Wellington, the official cariloneur of the New Zealand Bells which are now at Hyde Park London, secured a diploma with distinction at Malines, Belgium.

CONVICT LABOUR QUESTION

(Received this dav at noon.) WASHINGTON, July 20. Following on protests on the banning of Soviet pulpboard as cabled on July 28th. on the ground that it was produced by convict labour. White House announced authoritatively that Presi-, dent Hoover refuses to consider any bar to Soviet trade in general. The United States’ political attitude to the Soviet has no connection with trade matters, and the only goods barred will ho those produced under convict labour.
