MILITARY HEADS

ON COMPULSORY SERVICE

(By Telegraph—Press Association). WELLINGTON, July 30. It is stated that the following is the text of resolutions passed at a conference held here between the Minister of Defence, Hon. Mr Gobbe, General Young, and the senior officers of the Territorial Forces:—

(1) This meeting approves of the scheme now submitted, providing that the same is not extended beyond the 31st May, 1031, and providing • also, that the compulsory element is not dispensed with, even temporarily. (2) This meeting desires to place on record its earnest hope that the Defence Department will not dispense with the services of any members of the Staff Corps, or of any member of the Permanent Staff, except in the case of those officers who can be retired on pensions. (3) This meeting further desires to urge the advisability of setting up, as early as possible, a Royal Commission to report on the whole question of defence.

The first and .second resolutions were carried unanimously. There was one dissentient as regards the third resolution. Copies of the resolutions are being forwarded to all of the Territorial units throughout the Dominion.
